As of late 2024, Syria remains deeply affected by the aftermath of over 13 years of civil war, which has caused immense humanitarian challenges. The situation is complex, with several ongoing issues that hinder the country’s stability, peace, and recovery.
Displacement: Over half of Syria’s pre-war population has been displaced, both internally and externally. There are an estimated 6.7 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) and over 5.5 million Syrian refugees in neighboring countries, primarily in Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, and Iraq. Many people live in overcrowded, unsafe camps, with limited access to basic services.
Food Insecurity: More than 12 million Syrians are food insecure, and many face malnutrition. The agricultural sector has been severely damaged, with key areas of Syria’s fertile land destroyed, and economic instability exacerbating food scarcity.
Healthcare: The healthcare system has collapsed, with over half of Syria’s hospitals either destroyed or non-functional. There are major shortages in medical supplies, medicines, and trained personnel. This has led to poor health outcomes, particularly for vulnerable populations, such as children and the elderly.
Water and Sanitation: Clean water is in short supply due to damage to infrastructure, the contamination of water sources, and ongoing conflict. Access to safe sanitation is also limited, raising the risk of disease outbreaks, especially in camps and informal settlements.
How can we help?
The mission of the PLUME (Peace, Love, Unity in the Middle East) Poor Family Fund is to provide the people of Syria with basic necessities that most take for granted. These resources include food, water, clothing, medical support, medicine, and shelter. Many families have lost their homes, churches, schools, their health and the lives of loved ones. They live each day not knowing if they will eat, drink, have shelter, and unfortunately, if they will survive to see the next day.
We are currently working to establish our Nonprofit Organization 501(c)(3) status as a full fledged charitable entity, but in the meantime, the severe current events in Syria have caused an extreme necessity to offer assistance as soon as possible. Please consider making a monetary donation of any amount which will be provided as directly as possible to those in need via our contacts with the Syrian Orthodox Church in Damascus, Syria.
A Message from the Syrian Orthodox Patriarch:
Thank You!
A tremendous heartfelt thank you to all the supporters who recognize the needs and the challenges that Syrian people are facing at this very moment. Your kindness and generosity will never be forgotten.
